Range trend is commonly defined as the direction and rate of change in rangeland condition. It is considered the most important indicator of management effectiveness by many, if not most, range professionals. However, there is a lack of critical analyses of the uses and problems associated with range trend. Our objective is to discuss the role of trend in assessment of range management effectiveness, with a focus on problems associated with measuring and interpreting trend.
