Classification. The genus Acidaminococcus was proposed in 1969 by Rogosa to cover a group of anaerobic, gram-negative cocci.1 Initial description of the genus Acidaminococcus was based on diplococci from the pig alimentary tract previously reported by Fuller in 1966 and included in a unique species, Acidaminococcus fermentans, type species of the genus.1, 2 Type strain of A. Fermentans is strain VR4T = ATCC 25085T = CCUG 9996T = CIP 106432T = DSM 20731T. An emended description of A. Fermentans was published by Cook et al. In 1994.3 In 2007, a second species was described in the genus, Acidaminococcus intestini, to accommodate gram-negative cocci isolated from human clinical samples that displayed distinctive features of A. Fermentans.4 Type strain of A. Intestini is strain ADV 255.99T = AIP 283.01T = CIP 108586T = CCUG 50930T. Thus, to date, the genus comprises two validated species.
