Abstract

Objective: To determine the antimicrobial resistance of uropathogens isolated from outpatients treated at the Laboratorio Clínico de Especialidades Bolivar S.A Bucaramanga, Santander. Methods: We performed a retrospective study (from January to July in 2009) to 1394 outpatients treated at the Laboratorio Clínico de Especialidades Bolivar S.A Bucaramanga Santander, with or no clinical evidence of UTIs and with request of Gram, urine culture and Microbial Sensitivity Tests. Results: Of the 1394 cultures made, we obtained 589 patients with positive urine cultures (42.3%) accounted for most Gram-negative uropathogens, where Eschericha coli was the most common organism. With respect to the agents used in treatment, the susceptibility profile found for Eschericha coli and other microorganisms, showed high rates of resistance to Amoxicillin (59.1%), Nalidixic Acid (52.1%), Cotrimoxazole (42.2%) and Ciprofloxacin (40.7%). The lowest resistance rates were observed for Imipinem (0.8%) and Fosfomycin (3.1%). Conclusions: Eschericha coli remains the most frequently isolated organism in the world and has presented in recent years increased resistance to antibiotics. With regard to the female gender most affected remains the most vulnerable to these infections have higher risk factors.
