Abstract

Emerging contaminants are compounds that have a harmful potential for the environment and health, even at low levels. It is considered a new challenge for the scientific community, which has been conducting research worldwide to support the development of water quality standards for human consumption, since the conventional type treatment used by most ETAs is inefficient for removing such contaminants. Aiming to expand and contribute to the studies that are being carried out on the theme, the present work presents, through bibliographic research, a review of treatment technologies that remove emerging contaminants. Among the technologies covered, the following stand out: activated carbon, advanced oxidative processes (POAs) and filter membranes. The results show that all the technologies studied are necessary, promising and can be used on a real scale, however membrane filtration, as it has a high cost, becomes difficult to implement in the country's WTPs. Research related to emerging contaminants present in water destroyed for human consumption is of extreme environmental importance, through which it will be possible to identify possible contaminants and develop appropriate technologies for their elimination, avoiding damage to health.
