Abstract

Compared alprazolam and imipramine in the treatment of school refusal in 2 studies with a total of 41 Ss aged 7–17 yrs. In an open-label study, two-thirds of the Ss who completed a trial in both drug groups showed moderate to marked global improvement in symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, post-treatment scores calculated as change from baseline in anxiety ratings were significantly different among the treatment groups. The active medication groups showed the most improvement. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) with pretreatment scores as the covariates showed no significant differences among the treatment groups on change in anxiety and depression scales. Additional research is needed to determine whether these trends are explained by drug effects or baseline differences on rating scales. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
