Abstract

Extensional stresses in the central Aegean region reflect isostatic subsidence and uplift of brittle crustal blocks in response to crustal thinning. Block re-arrangements along active normal faults are probably the general cause for the generation of earthquakes. Reflection seismic data for the Gulf of Korinth graben is given here. It is concluded that the main factor controlling earthquakes is continuing uplift of the Peloponnesos block relative to the Gulf of Korinth graben. © 1984 The Geological Society.
