The problems associated with the disposal of waste tyres can be resolved to some extent by pyrolysis process. The light fractions of pyrolysis oil (LFPO) derived from waste automobile tyres in a pilot plant possess properties similar to diesel fuel and hence the LFPO can be used in combustion devices. In the present work, lower proportions (i.e. 5 to 20% at a regular interval of 5% on volume basis) of LFPO collected from a commercial pyrolysis plant were blended with 95 to 80% diesel respectively and used as alternative fuels in a diesel engine without any engine modification. Tests have been carried out to evaluate the performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder, four stroke, air cooled, direct injection (DI), diesel engine fueled with four different LFPO-diesel blends. The results of the investigation were analysed, compared with diesel operation in the same engine and presented in this paper. © 2014 The Authors.
