The focus of this chapter is to determine why materials are returned, which ones are returned, and how they are returned. It also discusses the driving forces behind the associations and makes them active in reverse logistics (RL). In addition to increased environmental concerns and severe environmental laws, RL has received increasing attention during this period. There are several explanations for RL in the related literature. For example, the Council of Logistics Management (CLM) defines RL as the "term often used to refer to the role of logistics in recycling, waste disposal, and management of hazardous materials; a broader perspective includes a relating to logistics activities carried out in source reduction, recycling, substitution, reuse of materials, and disposal". The European Working Group on Reverse Logistics, RevLog, has presented the following definition of RL: "The process of planning, implementing and controlling flows of raw materials, in process inventory, and finished goods, from a manufacturing, distribution, or use point to a point of recovery or point of proper disposal". © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
