Abstract

Azido group-contg. plasticizers were developed to obtain a good compatibility with azidopolymers, as energetic binders for explosives and propellants with a similar chem. structure. The liq. energetic plasticizers EGBAA, DEGBAA, TMNTA and PETKAA were synthesized and characterized, with glass transition temps. between -70.8° and -34.1°. The compds. were prepd. from the starting alcs. (i.e., ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, trimethylolpropane, and pentaerythritol, resp.) by esterification with chloroacetic acid followed by reaction of the chloroacetate esters with NaN3. The compds. had an acceptable thermal stability for practical applications, according to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data. The IR spectrum showed distinctly the C-N3, ester, carbonyl, and nitrate functional groups. Elemental anal. and NMR data agreed with the mol. structures. As a practical example, EGBAA was combined with the energetic binder Poly-Nimmo. The viscosity, glass-transition point, and stability of 50% mixts. were promising. [on SciFinder(R)]
