Mendeley Suggest is a new service available to all Mendeley users. It provides you with recommendations for papers that you may want to read. These recommendations are personalized and frequently updated with new suggestions, providing you with a constant stream of new ideas.

This feature draws on information you provide when creating your account, details from your profile and the contents of your personal library. Brand new accounts receive some initial suggestions, but to unlock truly personlized recommendations you will need to add references to your library (see the page on finding & import new content) and add research interests to your profile (see the page on completing your profile).

Suggest provides several sets of recommendations using a number of different 'starting points'. These include:

  • The entire contents of your Mendeley library. You need to have added references to your Mendeley Library in order to receive this recommendation set.

  • Your research interests that you have added to your profile. You need to have research interests listed on your profile in order to receive this recommendation set.

  • Popular in your discipline – This recommendation set provides references that are popular with other Mendeley users who have the same area of study (or 'discipline') as you.

  • Trending in your discipline – This recommendation set provides references from your discipline that have recently increased in popularity. These recommendations usually consist of newer publications, or that relate to currently popular topics.

  • Based on what you last read – These recommendations are related to the last paper you opened for reading, either in Mendeley Desktop, Web Library or on a Mendeley mobile application. You need to have opened a paper for reading in order to receive this recommendation set.

  • Based on what you last added to your library –These recommendations are related to the reference that you most recently added to your personal library. You need to have added references to your Mendeley Library in order to receive this recommendation set

For each recommendation, you have several options:

  • Save Reference – Use this to save the reference details to your personal library. The reference will then be available next time you sync Mendeley Desktop, or immediately in the Web Library.

  • Get full text at journal – This link will take you to the website of the publisher of the original paper. If you have access to the appropriate catalog you can then retrieve the full text of the article.

Tip: Remember that you may have access to catalogs and repositories through your institution. Check with your librarian.

  • Share document with followers – Use this option to share details of the reference with your Mendeley followers. They can 'like' and comment on the newsfeed post - allowing you to share ideas and ask for feedback on a paper.
