Abstract

The classification scheme for the new soil order of Andisols in Soil Taxonomy was published in 1990. This review gives the rationale for the new order (previously mostly Andepts) and discusses the development of the Andisol concept which requires the presence of allophane, imogolite, ferrihydrite and/or Al-humus complexes. The seven suborders are described, and their concepts are documented. The basis of great group separations is discussed in the major suborder of Udands, and new subgroup concepts described. The countries in which the major classes occur are noted.
