4,13-Diaza-18-crown-6 is shrouded by two p-sulfonatothiacalix[4]arenes in the presence of trivalent lanthanide ions in two different types of arrangements: (4,13-diaza-18-crown-6){(4,13-diprotodiaza-18-crown-6) ⊂{[La(H2O)8(p-sulfonatothiacalix[4]arene)4-]-}2}·17H2O (1) and (4,13-diprotodiaza-18-crown-6){[Eu(NO3)(H2O)7]2+}2{(4,13-diprotodiaza-18-crown-6)⊂[(p- sulfonatothiacalix[4]arene)4-]2}·17H2O (2). In complex 1, one sulfonato group of thiacalixarene ligates to the La3+ion, but in complex 2, the p-sulfonatothiacalixarene does not directly coordinate to the Eu3+ion which exists as [Eu(NO3)(H2O)7]2+but acts as a second-sphere ligand through hydrogen bonding. In both complexes, thiacalixarenes form irregular bi-layer structures in which the exo-capsule diaza-18-crown-6 traverses the hydrophobic layers. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
