Chlorination reactions of gibbsite and its partially dehydrated products with phosgene were studied by thermogravimetry. Surface areas and phase compositions were determined to acquire information on the degree of dehydration. The results indicate that the surface concentration of hydroxyls has an essential influence on the chlorination mechanism. © 1987.
