Timely completion of projects is one of the essential goals of project management. The present authors have developed a probability-based explanation of the lateness phenomenon as it relates to network complexity. Concurrent activities within a network are greater determinants of the delay than are comparable sequential activities. The implications for project management are discussed. © 1986.
