The effect of specific inhibitors of Pi transport on adenine nucleotide exchange and on oxidative phosphorylation has been investigated. Inhibition of Pi transport causes extensive inhibition of the ADP/ADP exchange and hence of oxidative phosphorylation. The ADP/ADP exchange is unaffected. This effect is probably due to inhibition of electrogenic Pi- transport which partially charge-compensates the ADP3-/ATP4- exchange. © 1971.
