Propagation of cracks within a corrugated interface in a ceramic laminate was investigated by calculating energetic conditions for a crack to be deflected around the saw-tooth corner of the interface profile. Calculated results were compared with experimental work reported elsewhere, which showed good agreements. Feasibility of making ceramic laminates with improved shear resistance through interface corrugation was discussed. © 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
