Reaction of dicyclopentadienylzirconium dichloride with sodium benzoate in aqueous solution yields the trinuclear complex [Zr3(μ3-O)(μ2-OH)3 (μ2-C6H5COO)3 (η5-C5H5)3]+ C6H5COO-·O(C2H5)2 whose structure has been determined by X-ray structure analysis. The complex cation is oxygen-centered. The ZrOZr angles (107.3(1) to 108.9(2)°) at the central oxygen atom are close to the tetrahedral angle. Each pair of Zr atoms is bridged by a benzoato and a hydroxo ligand. The coordination octahedra around each Zr atom are completed by an η5-bonded C5H5 group. © 1986.
