Three structurally different kinds of dislocation nodes have been observed in crystals of boron carbide having the approximate composition B4C. All three involve extended dislocations, and order of magnitude estimates for the specific translation twin boundary energy have been made from their geometrical shapes. Assuming that the stoichiometric composition for the boron carbide phase is B13C2, a translation twin model is proposed for the accommodation of hyperstoichiometry. © 1972.
