Environmental parameters like temperature, oxygen, pH, water current and silt content are the major constraints in fish breeding and hatching. A system in which these environmental parameters can be controlled has been developed and the conditions of flowing water have been simulated. Thereafter, a carp hatchery model CIFE-D81 was designed and tested: now it is possible to breed fish irrespective of climatic conditions. These hatcheries have been installed and demonstrated at 17 places in India. The rate of egg hatching was enhanced to about 95%. The system is commercially viable and can be operated anywhere with assured success. © 1986.
