Abstract

Based on studies of the Slovak Carpathian loess soils it appears that the loess mass is composed of various primary rock fragments and minerals, products of their secondary changes and different organic substances. These components are found in loess soils under various conditions. They are diversely distributed horizontally as well as vertically, depending on the relief, the climate, the degree of dissection, the water table level and other factors. The fabric of loess reflects not only the sediment genesis, but affects also its engineering geological properties. For this reason the research reported here attempts to clarify the structures of all lithofacies loess types found in the territory of Slovakia. © 1994.
