Throughout the decade of the 1980's, coastal resources of the United States will experience unprecedented pressure for development. The National Coastal Ecosystems Team (NCET) of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been compiling existing information for coastal areas in the form of coastal characterizations and has recognized the need to implement a computerized delivery system for applying this information to coastal issues. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evolution of NCET's geographic information system and its ability to address coastal development issues. © 1982.
