Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality measures as defined by Cloninger's Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and coping strategies in a medical-student population. Three hundred and thirty students aged 18 to 23 years completed the TPQ and a coping strategies questionnaire. Both type of stressor and personality variables were related to coping strategies. Medical training-related stress increased the likelihood of self-blame and problem-resolution coping, whereas interpersonal stressors were linked to social support seeking. High persistence also increased the probability of problem-solving. Harm avoidance was associated with passive and emotion-focused coping responses such as avoidant coping and self-blame. Reward dependence was related to social support seeking and total number of coping strategies used. These results are discussed in relation to current issues regarding the study of interactions between personality, situational factors and coping. © 2003 Publié par Elsevier SAS.
