The isolation from the roots of Cicer arietinum of a rhizosphere bacterium which can utilize formononetin as substrate is described. The organism was only capable of degrading isoflavones and flavones with common hydroxylation patterns, i.e. those substituted at the 3-,5-,7-,3′- or 4′- positions. © 1970.
