Abstract

A discussion is given of the historical background of the Kerr magneto-optic effect as well as of details of the original experiments leading to its discovery. Kerr's scientific achievements are described in the context of research endeavour of the nineteenth century. A review is also given of modern applications of the effect in pure and applied magnetism. © 1977.
