This brief feature article looks at "kinked" silica nano-pores, created using an evaporation-induced self-assembly approach. Compared with "straight through" proteinaceous nano-pores of similar dimensions, kinked nano-pores exhibit up to a five-fold reduction in translocation velocity, which has been identified as one of the critical issues in DNA sequencing. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
