Laser multiphoton dissociation-multiphoton ionization (MPD-MPI) spectra of VOCl3 have been obtained in the ranges 430-440 and 380-390 nm. V+ and VO+ were the only ions produced by the pulsed dye laser. We find that both the V+ and VO+ spectra are continuous and structureless. The laser power dependence of the production of V+ ions is substantially stronger than that of VO+ in those wavelength ranges. These results are interpreted in terms of a novel pathway for formation of V+ by photo-dissociation of VO+. © 1992.
