The magnetic behavior of meso-tetratotylporphyrins (TTP) meso-(4N-methyltetrapirydyl)porphyrin iodide, and their iron and cobalt complexs was studied. Phenylporphyrins were synthesized by condensation of pyrrole with p-tolylaldehyde in the boiling propionic acid. Iron or cobalt atoms were inserted into the free-base porphyrins by conventional methods. The effective anisotropy coefficient obtained for Fe-TTP was found to be several times larger than that of Co-TMePyP. The results show that for both porphyrins the torque signal increases almost linearly with increasing magnetic field without any tendency to saturate up to 1.8 T.
