A novel non-surfactant method was described to synthesize mesoporous silica using dye basic fuchsin as template. Chemical reactions were introduced into the formation of mesopores rather than the weak electrostatic or hydrogen-bonding interactions in the traditional surfactant routes. The reactant composition was found to be crucial to the pore structure of objective product. The formation mechanism of mesopore was also proved. © 2007 Yao Xu.
