Methoxide-catalysed transesterification of poly(vinyl acetate) with methanol was examined kinetically. Polymer specimens were isolated at various stages of hydrolysis and the extent of their colourimetric reaction with iodine determined. Polymers with up to 60 mol % degree of hydrolysis can be prepared reproducibly by careful kinetic control of the reaction conditions. The analytical sensitivity for formation of the red I2-PVA complex was consistent with a developing hydroxyl group block structure as transesterification proceeds. © 1978.
