A novel approach for photohydrogen production from a combined system of Halobacterium halobium, Phormidium valderianum and Escherichia coli is reported. Hydrogen production was several times higher in the combined system than with Phormidium valderianum alone. Various conditions were optimized and continuous hydrogen production was achieved for six days under cyclic illumination at 30°C. © 1994.
