Sholl12 demonstrated that the dendritic plexus can be described by an exponential equation with 2 parameters. In this paper a method is described to obtain, in a simple way, these parameters. Using the number of first order dendrites and the intersections of dendrites with two cylinders (i.e. 2 circles in the eye-piece), both a and k may be determined. The surface area and the length of the dendrites and the extension of the dendritic tree were also calculated. In 4 pyramidal neurons the basal dendritic plexus and in 3 stellate cells the whole dendritic plexus was measured, which is a necessary procedure in each new experimental situation. The method to calculate a and k appears to be sufficiently accurate. © 1970.
