Abstract

An indirectly heated speed sensor, utilizing temperature-sensitive quartz crystals, is evaluated for measuring currents in the deep sea. The various mechanisms responsible for the heat transfer between the sensing elements and the surrounding fluid is considered. The quartz-crystal sensor is cooled only by forced convection to velocities below 1 mm/sec. An empirical relationship is determined to predict the cooling of this sensor. © 1972.
