Under strictly anhydrous conditions, the reaction of tetraethylammonium cyanate with a lanthanide(III) nitrate in acetonitrile yields solid adducts of general formula [(C2H5)4N]3[Ln(NCO)3-(NO3)3], where Ln3+ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Er and Yb. The complexes were characterized by i.r. spectroscopy and elemental analysis. I.R. data indicate that all three cyanate groups are nitrogen-bonded to the Ln3+ ions and that the three nitrate groups are also coordinated to the metal ions. Coordination number nine is indicated in all of the complexes. © 1974.
