Abstract

Vapour grown magnesium obtained as a by-product during the Bridgman growth of magnesium has been studied with a scanning electron microscope. The morphology of the crystals varied in the same colony from polyhedra and composite prisms with rings on the (0001) and parabolae on the (1010) planes over spheres with or without crystallographic planes to platelets and whiskers. The maximum sizes of the vapour grown crystals varied from 0.02 to 0.5 mm thickness and had a length of 0.4 mm. © 1971.
