For the analysis of stress- and strain partitioning between the phases of a composite, Finite Element Methods (FEM) have proven to be a powerful tool, but the complex microstructures of real materials tend to exceed the capabilities of conventional FE analysis. In the present paper, two new procedures for FE model generation are described: a rezoning algorithm for net-adaptation, and the use of "multiphase" elements. In addition, some other methodical aspects in FE modelling of the deformation behavior of multiphase materials are discussed. © 1995.
