The residence time distributions (RTDs) of hydrophilic solids in the collection zone of flotation columns were successfully fitted using the axial dispersion model. Particle vessel dispersion number (and mean residence time) decreased with increasing particle size (7.5 to 150μm) from a value initially similar to that of the liquid. The relationship between mean residence time ratio and particle size was predicted using a hindered settling equation. The ratio of mean solids to liquid residence times was correlated to the ratio of the solids to liquid vessel dispersion number which suggested liquid dispersion coefficient ≈ 0.8 solids dispersion coefficient. © 1992.
