Abstract

Several ingots with aluminium contents in the range 36-45 wt.% Al in the γ phase region of the TiAl system were cast using high purity titanium and aluminium. The floating zone technique was used for all specimens to obtain single crystals. Pure γ single-phase single-crystal specimens were obtained successfully with aluminium contents down to 40 wt.%. For the stoichiometric composition, two phases appeared after conventional zone melting and these could not be eliminated by a long anneal at 1273 K. However, large single-phase grains could be obtained after modification of the floating zone technique. © 1983.
