The time constant for the collisional deactivation of the υ = 1 vibrational level of N2 is found to be 1.5 ± 0.5 s in liquid nitrogen of 99.9995% purity of 78 K. This result is consistent with a simple binary collision theory of vibrational relaxation for liquids. © 1974.
