About

Abul Fazal M. Arif is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia. He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from NED University of Engineering & Technology, Pakistan (1985). He earned his MS (1988) and Ph.D (1991) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from University of Minnesota, USA. He worked in automobile industry for several years in the area of design and manufacturing before joining academia in 1996 as a faculty member. In 1998, he joined KFUPM as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, where he has risen through the ranks to become a Professor in 2010. He has taught a number of Mechanical Engineering graduate and undergraduate courses including mechanics of materials, machine design, manufacturing processes, finite element analysis in mechanical design, nonlinear finite element analysis, and finite element analysis in metal forming. The fields of his research interest include applied computational mechanics; modeling of multi-physics problems; laser assisted manufacturing and surface modification processes; metal forming and other advanced manufacturing processes. His primary area of research is the linear and nonlinear mechanics associated with multi-physics problems. It involves a combination of computational and experimental work. The general aim of the research carried out by him and his research collaborators is to integrate material response under thermo-mechanical loading into governing equations and to solve the resulting equations by numerical techniques, with prime emphasis on the applications of the finite difference and finite element methods. The goals are to develop a more fundamental understanding of the relation between deformation and process parameters during materials processing, and to apply this understanding to product design, tooling design with enhanced life and optimum process control. Processes studied include metal extrusion, metal rolling, laser heating, laser cutting, laser welding, laser shock processing, submerged arc-welding and spin casting. More recent research work includes multi-physics modeling of photovoltaic solar panel with auxiliary concentrator; non-dimensional finite element modeling of thermal problems; and micro-mechanical modeling of thermal barrier coating. He has authored more than 150 archival technical publications, including more than 100 journal papers. He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and currently serves as ASME/ABET program evaluator for Mechanical Engineering programs. Dr. Arif is recipient of several awards including KFUPM Best Researcher award (2008, 2013), KFUPM Best Teaching award (2002, 2009), KFUPM Best Research Project award (2010), Donald Julius Groen award from IMechE’s Manufacturing Industries Division (2007) and Best Compliant Mechanism Paper Award at the ASME 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information (2011).
