After graduating from Swansea University with a 2:1 honours degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry, I decided to re-enrol at Swansea to undertake a MSc in Mechanical Engineering to further enhance my prospect of becoming a chartered member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, which is an important career goal for myself. Gaining a merit in the MSc prompted myself to stay in academia and further my studies by undertaking a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, focused on printing structures for stem cell growth, tissue engineering and implantation. As part of my undergraduate degree a year in industry was undertaken at McCann and Partners, a building services firm based in Cardiff. As part of my role I regularly conducted feasibility studies into low and zero carbon technology applications to buildings that were in the design phase of construction. The experienced gained gave me a deeper appreciation of the business aspects involved in an engineering company and/or project, as well as an appreciation of the flow of information during engineering design. In my role as a Sales Assistant in a WH Smiths franchise at Welcome Break I gained insight into how stock moves through a company, and an initial appreciation of the finances involved in a business which has been built upon during modules completed as part of my BEng and MSc degrees. I am still involved with the swimming community, coaching and officiating on a voluntary basis. The peak of my experience was as the assistant coach for Bridgend county swim squad, which was a temporary position undertaken during the time between my degrees. As part of the role squads of up to 25 were managed on a daily basis.
