I have an interest in electroanalytical methods by the use of voltammetric techniques, owing to their high sensitivity, low cost, simplicity of instrumentation and ease of implementation. Focus on the approaches for the detection of elemental mercury (and any other heavy metals), dissolved in aqueous solution. In a first approach nanoparticulate gold, silver or aluminium will be used to pre-concentrate mercury prior to electro-chemical detection via stripping voltammetry. A second method will exploit the high solubility of mercury in some hydrocarbon solvents to make use the latter as pasting agents in electrodes so that they function both as a binder and to pre-concentrate of the target species.
