Allan Johnson's research and teaching interests centre broadly around twentieth-century British literature, cultural studies, literary architecture, and mass media. His doctoral thesis -- for which he received the Bonamy Dobree Award from the University of Leeds -- considered the unsettling and unsettled portrayal of textual influence in the work of contemporary British author Alan Hollinghurst. This thesis argued for the productive capacity of literary influences by reading them as necessarily, yet counterintuitively, rooted in the visual rather than in the textual. His current research focuses on themes of absence and silence in the twentieth century, and moves across several significant divides: from late-Victorian to contemporary; from British to American; from deeply theoretical to acutely textual. Before moving to Hong Kong, Allan taught at the University of Leeds and the University of London (Birkbeck)
