About

Dr. Amalia Gastaldelli is the responsible of the Cardiometabolic Risk Laboratory at the Institute of Clinical Physiology (IFC) of CNR of Pisa, Italy (position first researcher, since 2010), and adjunct associate professor at the Division of Diabetes of University of Texas Health Science Center, in San Antonio, TX, USA (since 2006). She received in 2014 the National Habilitation for Full Professor in Endocrinology and for Associate Professor in Bioengineering (validity until 2020). She has more than 20 years experience in leading national and international scientific projects investigating metabolic diseases including obesity, non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes. These include alterations in glucose and lipid metabolism, insulin resistance and ectopic fat accumulation. She was the principal investigator in many international projects most of which on liver metabolism, like the project “Effect of Exenatide on Brain, Adipose Tissue, Pancreas, and Liver Function”, the EU-FP7 FLIP (Fatty Liver Inhibition of Progression), the H2020 EPOS (Elucidating Pathways of Steatohepatitis), one H2020 Marie Curie ETN program for training of international students (FOIE GRAS) and two Marie Curie RISE for the staff exchange (MAST4HEALTH and mtFOIEGRAS) and the IMI2-LITMUS on the discovery of biomarkers of NAFLD. She is also collaborating with many institutions in Europe and United States, participating to local grants as foreign partner. In 2011 she initiated and is currently the chair of the EASD NAFLD Study Group, which provides a joint forum for diabetologists and hepatologists to explore the diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment of NAFLD and NASH. She was a member of the EASL-EASD-EASO committee for the “Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of NAFLD” (published april 2016). Since 2010 she is the Director of the European Chapter of the American College of Nutrition (ECACN), member of board of directors of American College of Nutrition (ACN), member of the publication committee of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition and member of the Board of the European Group for the study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR). She has published more than 200 articles in international journals and book chapters with a global H index of 68 and more than 14,000 citations. She is also the associate editor of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition and reviewer for more the 25 international peer review journals. She has been an invited speaker in more than 70 national and international congresses and recently recognized among the top Italian women scientists for biomedical sciences.
