Dr Tassos Koidis is a Lecturer in Food Science at Queen's University Belfast since 2010 and principal investigator of the Institute for Global Food Security and Advanced ASEET centre within QUB. He holds a BSc in Chemistry, a MSc in Food Technology and Quality Assurance from Reading University (UK), and a PhD in the Chemistry of minor constituents of olive oil. He worked in the Irish Agriculture and Food development authority (Teagasc) in Dublin as Research Officer before his academic appointment. Dr Koidis investigates a number of research themes in the area of food chemistry and food analysis. In the food authenticity area, he develops innovative analytical methods based on the fusion of chromatography and spectroscopy coupled with advanced data analysis and e-decision systems that check the authenticity of foods, such as rapeseed and palm oil. His research has the potential to contribute to UK’s policing of sustainable food labelling. In addition, he investigates the effect of novel food processing technologies on bioactive constituents in vitro. Technologies include High Pressure Processing, Omhic heating, volumetric microwave heating, active packaging and other as part of a €3m FP7 project (STARTEC) where he held the role of WP leader. He is now participating in the €5m Horizon 2020 project OLEUM about analytical tools for confirmation of olive oil authenticity and in a project about tea processing optimisation using sensor technology along with a leading international food industry. He has published more than 34 peer-reviewed scientific papers (12 h-index, >500 citations) and co-authored 5 book chapters. He has supervised 6 PhD thesis and three post doctorate researchers and served as External Examiner in a number of PhDs. Apart from attracting significant external funding and contracted by the UK government for research projects, Tassos has a tracked record of industry – academia collaborations and consultations.
