My work is inspired by the late Marvin Minsky, also known as the ‘Godfather of Artificial Intelligence’, and I’m motivated by his statement around Collective Intelligence showing “you that you can build a mind from many little parts, each mindless by itself”. In 2014, Cognitive Systems, a South African software engineering company driven by biologically inspired in-stream cognitive computing, revealed its Artificial Mind Engine, and my vision is for it to augment processes in physical security and asset tracking, healthcare, and food production in order to ensure the health and safety of communities and their people. My research focus areas are Agent-based Systems, Distributed Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Computing in streaming Big Data environments, including video and sensor streams in the emerging Internet of Things.
