I have a keen interest in cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) physiology and biochemistry, completing a PhD on the toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in the La Trobe University School of Botany under Dr John W. Anderson in Melbourne, Australia. After my PhD, I went on to work on secondary metabolite (antibiotic) production in streptomycetes, gaining experience in microbial bioreactor culture and metabolic flux analysis at the University of Surrey (UK) under Prof. Mike Bushell. I have has since returned to cyanobacterial research and began work at ANU in 2003 in Canberra, focusing on cyanobacterial carboxysome structure and function. During this time, working in close collaboration with Prof. Murray Badger and Assoc. Prof. Dean Price I determined underlying protein interactions which are essential for ß-carboxysome formation. For a short period I also worked with Prof. Owen Atkin on the spatial heterogeneity of mitochondria in plant cells and the contribution of cell types to overall leaf respiration. I have since returned to cyanobacterial biochemistry and physiology and my current research involves the incorporation of carboxysomes and their sub-complexes into plant chloroplasts for the enhancement of photosynthesis as part of the Realizing Increased Photosynthesis Efficiency (RIPE) network funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation.
