I did my undergraduate degree in Geology, in Brazil, at the Pará State Federal University, a M.Sc. in Soil Science at Penn State University, and Ph.D. in Geography at University of California in Santa Barbara. I have been working since 1992 at Imazon, an NGO dedicated to promote sustainable development in the Amazon through research, policy analysis, dissemination and capacity building. I became a Senior Researcher in 2001 and was the executive director of the institute from 2005 through 2008. My research focuses in two areas. The first one is on spatial analysis to identify priority areas for conservation in the Amazon and to map carbon stocks of forests. The second, on the development of remote sensing techniques to map and monitor land cover and land use changes, particularly forest degradation caused by selective logging, fires and fragmentation. As examples of synergistic activities, I coordinated the Amazon Monitoring Program of Imazon, and developed the first non-governmental deforestation alert system of the Brazilian Amazon, which is operational since September 2006. I am also member of the GOFC-GOLD (Global Observation of Forest Change and Land Cover Dynamics) and Leader of Avina Foundation since January 2008. In 2010, I was awarded the Skoll Award on Social Entrepreneurship. I have published more than 75 studies on peer review journals, book chapters, symposiums and reports.
