About

From 2000 till 2005, I studied Economics, with a specialisation in Spatial Economics, at the Free University of Amsterdam. In the final year of my study, I investigated the suburbanisation of non-Western migrants for Amsterdam while stationed at the former Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), which resulted in my thesis “Black Flight”. After obtaining my Master’s degree (cum laude), I started to work as a researcher at the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency in The Hague (mid 2005). I'm still employed at the PBL where I'm mainly working on research topics regarding residential mobility decision processes, demographic developments, and the connection between spatial developments and demographic developments such as the greying and declining population. From 2006 till 2011, I also worked as a PhD student at the Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt) of the University of Amsterdam. My PhD research addressed the discrepancy between individuals' stated intentions to move and their actual mobility behaviour. Through 5 complementary studies, I investigated the mechanisms contributing to behavioural inconsistencies in the individual mobility decision-making process through a longitudinal investigation of actual residential behaviour conditional on mobility intentions and residential preferences. Each study is written as an individual research paper; four studies have been published in an international peer-reviewed scientific journal and one has been published as a chapter of a book. For those who are interested, my thesis can be downloaded from http://dare.uva.nl/en/record/395590 and a paper copy can be ordered by sending me an email with the shipping details.
