As a school administrator, Dr. Carolyn Koos is a team builder, a visionary thinker and a strategic leader. She holds a bachelor of music education from Morningside College and a master of science in music education from Drake University. She has also was involved in graduate work in policy and leadership studies at the University of Iowa, completed two masters degrees from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and holds her PhD from Illinois State University. In addition to higher education, Dr. Koos regularly participates in professional development courses on such topics as staff rights and financial leadership.
Dr. Koos’ most recent leadership role was at Deer Park Community Consolidated School District #82, where she served as Chief administrator and principal for five years. Her responsibilities at this Ottawa, Illinois, school included handling the school’s finances and personnel, developing strategic planning, performing staff development, implementing a master facilities plan, and serving as the curriculum director. As the Chief administrator and principal, Dr. Koos improved the district in numerous ways, including ongoing development of a preschool program and introducing new technologies, such as Smart Boards, to the classrooms. Deer Park CCSD #82 was in the top 10% for student achievement in the State of Illinois during her administrative tenure.
When not working or participating in professional organizations, Dr. Koos enjoys spending time with her nine children and 16 grandchildren, who are scattered throughout the country. She can also frequently be found getting her hands dirty in the garden or cooking her favorite German and Italian foods.
