David Lawrence is director of the Center for Injury Prevention Policy and Practice within the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University. He has worked in the fields of injury prevention and public health since the mid-1970s as a paramedic, a registered nurse, an epidemiologist, and a program administrator. Before moving to California in 1998, Lawrence worked 11 years for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. He served as director of the Injury Research and Prevention Section there for four years. David is currently serving as editor of SafetyLit, free on-line bibliographic database and weekly literature update service containing summaries of journal articles on topics relevant to the occurrence, prevention and outcomes of unintentional injuries, interpersonal violence, and self-harm. SafetyLit, originally patterned after a discontinued service developed by Sandy Bonzo of the CDC, got its start as a weekly email message sent to about 50 researchers and practitioners in California and Louisiana. Now, each week the SafetyLit website receives about 60,000 unique visitors who view summaries of current research or search the archive of material published in the past.
